A Life in Service to Thailand

A Life in Service to Thailand

Sirikit was Queen of Thailand from 1950 to 2016, making her one of the longest-serving queen consorts in the world. After the death of her husband Bhumibol in 2016, she was revered as Queen Mother. Her birthday, August 12, is an official holiday in Thailand and is celebrated as Mother's Day – unlike in the rest of the world. This underscores her role as a maternal symbol of the nation.

Charitable Work and Social Engagement

Queen Sirikit became involved in charitable and social projects early on. From 1956, she served as President of the Thai Red Cross and initiated numerous relief efforts. In 1979, she established refugee camps on the border with Cambodia to provide shelter for tens of thousands of people fleeing the terror regime of the Khmer Rouge. She also founded the "SUPPORT" foundation to promote traditional Thai handicrafts and provide income for women in rural areas through weaving and handicrafts. Through such initiatives, she supported rural development, environmental and nature conservation, and disadvantaged population groups throughout the country.

Cultural Unity and Tolerance

Sirikit also promoted the cultural cohesion of her country. Her commitment to tolerance towards the Muslim minority in southern Thailand made her very popular there, while she also supported Buddhist communities during troubled times. Numerous institutions and places bear her name in honor of her achievements – such as the Queen Sirikit Convention Center in Bangkok, parks and a botanical garden, a dam in the north of the country, an annual golf tournament (Queen Sirikit Cup), and even newly discovered species such as a crab and a yellow rose.

A Nation Mourns Its "Mother of the Nation"

In Thailand, Queen Sirikit will be remembered as the embodiment of maternal kindness and grace. The news of her death filled the entire country with deep sorrow. Many Thais are expressing their condolences these days – many wear black, lay flowers, and pay their last respects to their beloved Queen Mother. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul called her the "great Mother of the Nation" and honored her unparalleled work for the people, culture, and development of the country. Her death is an irreplaceable loss for Thailand; but her life's work of love, warmth, and dedication will continue and inspire people.

เราจะไม่ลืมพระคุณของพระองค์ท่าน We will never forget your kindness.

🙏

May She Rest in Peace

Her legacy will live on in the hearts of the Thai people forever.
